Cleaning Cart Design

Cleaning cart designs seem to lack customization flexibility. So the idea is to have the ability to mount and fast hold things to solve various problems. I've listed a few features, requirements and important points in the list below:

  • Establish Total Height (Compare with Uline and Rubbermaid Carts)
  • Grip Handles
  • Caster diameter (must be able to go over cracks and elevator threshold easily
  • Height clearance for what sits on bottom in cart
    • Bucket heights, portable vacuum
  • Dust bin with broom
  • Keeping weight down (material choices could determine a lot)
  • Long reach duster
  • Lockbox area
  • Get weight of other carts
  • Towel Storage
  • Towel disposal bin
  • trash pickup bin
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Reacher grabber tool
  • Small tool kit, implements for various tasks

After thinking through some designs, I've established one cart's design is probably the best starting point.

The Uline Marvelous Cart takes a concept of horizontal aluminum bars that you can affix clips and accessory holders to in locations that best suit you.

Because this is built upward from center, it gives you balance. But I think it fails in a few ways.

  1. atypical aluminum extrusion
  2. not long enough to support enough tools with spacing
  3. bottom tray not entirely thought through.
  4. Wheels exposed may present an unnecessary tripping problem
  5. No large trash can (not necessary for every situation).
  6. No protective corners so it can damage a wall

How to solve

The solution is to use E-Track on both sides. Many holders are available for this use case. It also means you could put e-track in your vehicle, storage or garage and those same tools, holders can be transposed.

But there are things needed here for my use case that I've not entirely worked out.

  1. Max dimensions so it still fits in elevator
  2. Backpack vacuum holder
  3. Long handle tool mounts
  4. 3+
  5. Mini toolbox slots
  6. Wet floor signs
  7. Split caddy mounting points
  8. Fold out trash bin holder only when you need it.

Perhaps even more could be done:

  • Onboard air filter powered by 40v battery?
  • Electrical outlet pass through?
  • Lockbox area or secret compartment
  • Phone or tablet holder
  • Notebook or list holder
  • BT speaker
  • Protective Corners

Existing Cart Styles

Existing janitor / cleaning carts are plastic and while some have a feature of a locking cabinet they seem to be driven around trash collection instead of tool holding. Their tool holding areas seem ok but also inflexible and not entirely sensical. Potentially they were originally formed for injection molding based on proprietary or company-driven tools instead of bring your own. I'm certain people hack and mod these carts but the question is, is it worth it?

Dust Mop Idea

A dust mop is an annoying problem. You want a big one where needed to cover surface area. But then you're bringing dust around with you. So what's the solution? Probably to bring a shop vacuum with you on the cart. After bringing the dust to the deposit area, shopvac the dust and shop vac around the dust mop. Next the big idea. Instead of bringing the dust mop on the cart, create a slot underneath the cart. The dust mop will sit under the cart docked in a designated slot. It can be partially visible from the top but ideally none of it will stick out the sides.

Mods and 3D Printing Ideas

1. I want a way to quickly attach or dock hoses so it's either coiled and tied on itself or is docked somewhere else so the hose isn't flopping everywhere.

2. I want a plastic clamp that fits on a telescopic pole (with broom screw), and that would allow me to put a rag or custom duster or even some sort of paper or paper towel dusting material to grab cobwebs. This would allow me to quickly dispose of a dusty material instead of having to clean a nice duster.

Just speculating but if I were to scour for 3d printed items for the cleaning field, I'd think attachment adapters, hanging hooks, possibly brushes, picks and similar agitator type implements.
